In the summer of 2022 Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis collaborated with the St. Jacobs community and Woolwich Healthy Communities in the creation of the St. Jacobs Guest House.
In the summer of 2023 Grassroots took over the management and coordination of the space.
History:
Woolwich Healthy Communities Coordinating Committee (WHCCC) responded to the Ukrainian Refugee crisis by creating a 10-room transitional home, Woolwich Guest House for Ukrainian Refugees in Transition, to provide supportive transitional housing for Ukrainians displaced from their homeland due to the war in July 2022. The house is located on Isabella St. in St. Jacobs.
WHCCC ‘s role is primarily to provide safe and quality housing. We are partnering with other agencies that will provide additional support.

Координаційний комітет здорових громад Вулвіча (WHCCC) відреагував на кризу українських біженців, створивши 10-кімнатний тимчасовий будинок Woolwich Guest House для українських біженців у перехідному періоді, щоб забезпечити тимчасове житло для підтримки українців, переміщених зі своєї батьківщини через війну в липні 2022 року. Будинок розташований на вулиці Ізабелла в Сент-Джейкобс (Святого Якова).

The primary objective of WR Grassroot Response to the Ukrainian Crisis is to connect volunteers and housing options to Ukrainians in Canada affected by the war. Meanwhile, the specific aim of the St. Jacob's house is to assist them in their immediate necessities, including housing, job placement, healthcare, food, education, and cultural integration. Through our efforts at St. Jacob's house, we seek to cultivate an environment that emphasizes community, empathy, and understanding for all involved.

Every Ukrainian individual residing in St. Jacob's house is informed of our rules and regulations. These include:

While our volunteers strive to assist in areas like employment support, transportation, job placements, language learning and connecting them with housing options, we emphasize the importance of personal initiative. Each guest is provided with local resources to settle and employment services within the Region of Waterloo that can also assist them in numerous ways. We do expect individuals to actively engage in their resettlement process in order to ensure that they know the steps they need to take to be successful in Ontario. We emphasize the importance of these steps in order for them to show their commitment in building their life in Canada.

У той час як наші волонтери прагнуть допомогти в таких сферах, як підтримка з працевлаштування, транспорт, вивчення мови та пропозиція різних варіантів житла, ми наголошуємо на важливості особистої ініціативи. Кожному гостю надаються місцеві ресурси для поселення та служби працевлаштування в регіоні Ватерлоо, які також можуть допомогти їм різними способами. Ми очікуємо, що люди будуть активно брати участь у процесі адаптації, щоб переконатися, що вони знають, які кроки вони повинні зробити, щоб досягти успіху в Онтаріо. Donate Financially
The owners of the facility, Karen and Bob, are amazing people who are offering space (for reduced rent) and helping to coordinate the settlement of the families.
We want to ensure all families have a safe place to live even if they can't afford it. We are fundraising to offset the cost of rent partially or fully.
Volunteer
Volunteering at Hillside is just one of the many ways you can make a difference. We currently need assistance with coordinating donations, fundraising and ensuring we have enough people to help with the settlement of Ukrainian guests. (transportation to employment or appointments, helping to find employment, advocating for ensure they are connected with various Regional/provincial services)
Donate Furniture
We are in need of 2 single-sized box springs, alarm clocks, hangers, towels... and many other items to make the space feel more like home.
We have limited storage space so we can only accept the items specifically needed.
Build Community Support
We believe strongly that in order to ensure these families get off on the right foot they need to feel like they belong. We are looking for volunteers to help build connections within the Maryhill community. This may look like potlucks, or outdoor activities, or opportunities for the youth to get to know each other.
