Grassroots Response Meeting with MPP Aislinn Clancy and the Ukrainian Community

In a moment that felt like a warm ray of light amid ongoing challenges, representatives from Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis recently gathered with MPP Aislinn Clancy for Kitchener Centre and members of the Ukrainian community displaced by Russia's war on Ukraine.

Though it was our first in-person conversation, Aislinn listened with unwavering empathy, her thoughtful questions drawing out the raw, everyday struggles of families rebuilding in our region—from securing timely OHIP coverage for a pregnant newcomer to helping an elder find meaningful work.

We delved into the harsh realities: Ukrainians under the now-ended CUAET program lack refugee status, leaving them in limbo without full access to essential services. The war rages on, making return impossible for many, yet the path to permanent residency remains a daunting maze of requirements. These uncertainties amplify isolation, poverty, and vulnerability for families who’ve already lost so much.

What emerged wasn’t just dialogue, but partnership. Aislinn offered practical solutions for immediate needs, and together we crafted action plans to bridge gaps in healthcare, employment, and legal support. Her genuine commitment—rooted in humanity and action—reminds us that true advocacy begins with listening and culminates in change.
