These people may remain unnoticed, and their names may not be publicly mentioned, but their work is incredibly important. Their kindness and dedication stay behind the scenes, but the impact they have on the lives of others is real and immense. They are the Volunteers.
Daria, who is now 15, flew to Canada on September 15, 2022, with her mom, dad, younger brother, and cat. The family didn’t need help; they were able to build their path in the new country on their own. But around them were people who struggled and who needed support.
In adolescence, few plan their futures. Most want fun, carefreeness, ease, and no obligations. Daria chooses to be a teenage volunteer — an incredible opportunity to learn new things, help others, and make the world a better place from a young age. By giving her time and effort, she not only supports those who need it but also develops important skills: compassion, responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. Together with her friend, they spent their summer holidays helping prepare guest houses for Grassroots (cleaning, ironing, sorting items). They also call newcomers and document the type of assistance they need.
This is not surprising when you have a wonderful example like her mother. Daria's mom, Aliona, is a talented baker and volunteer. During a summer camp organized by PLAST, she prepared meals for the participants. She is now a volunteer in charge of social media for PLAST.
Daria dreams of becoming a digital designer. She already has had her first success: she designed a business card for her mom. Currently, her volunteer work at Grassroots involves helping create holiday greeting cards (thank-you and greeting cards for everyone involved).
There is no doubt that this young dear one has a bright future ahead of her. Step by step, she is building her future while combining it with charity work.
Talented teenagers like Daria always evoke sincere admiration. Their energy, creativity, and courage to dream inspire not only their peers but also adults. The ability to combine their education with developing their other talents and persistently pursue their goals proves that our youth have the power to change the world.
Daria’s story once again shows that age is not a barrier to achievement or positive change. Her ideas, determination, and courage are a true source of inspiration for everyone who seeks to create something new and meaningful.
Volunteering gives Daria the chance to see life from different perspectives, meet new people, and form strong connections with like-minded individuals. It’s also a way to feel part of something bigger than herself and to understand that even small actions can have a big impact. Moreover, by helping others, Daria develops her own inner strength and learns to appreciate the life and resources she has.
"Helping others is not an obligation, but a sincere joy that multiplies the meaning of our lives." — Albert Einstein.
