The Ukrainian community in Sault Ste. Marie recently hosted its first Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day, a vibrant celebration that brought together over 700 people. This event was a joyous occasion and an introduction of the Ukrainian culture (community?) to the broader community of Sault Ste. Marie. It provided an opportunity for Ukrainians—newcomers after 2022 and those from previous waves of immigration—to connect and celebrate their shared heritage.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was seeing members of older Ukrainian-Canadian families rediscover their roots in the local Ukrainian community. Many of these individuals had been unaware of a Ukrainian presence in the city until now. The atmosphere was lively, with conversations filled with stories of Ukrainian traditions and cultural ties.
The food court was a major attraction, with the star of the day being the delicious homemade perogy prepared by Iryna Pedko’s family. Attendees couldn’t get enough of the traditional dish, making it a highlight of the event. Additionally, professionally baked 'Korovai'—a traditional Ukrainian wedding and welcoming important guests bread—was displayed and tested, further showcasing the depth of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
In addition to the culinary delights, the cultural performances were equally impressive. Songs by pani Lesya and Mariia captivated the audience, while the dance club ‘Marichka’ put on a stunning display of Ukrainian folk dance, earning enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Visitors were also treated to a wonderful market showcasing beautiful handmade crafts from the family of artists Dmytro and Iryna Pustovar. Their unique, handcrafted items drew attention and admiration from attendees, further enriching the cultural experience of the day.
Exploring the informational stands was another highlight, as they provided valuable insights into the history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, Ukrainian culture, and the current needs of the Ukrainian community in Sault Ste. Marie. Guests had the opportunity to learn more about Ukraine's rich traditions, art, and the challenges faced by the Ukrainian community today.
The success of this event has inspired the organizers to plan more gatherings in the future, with the hope of strengthening the bonds among local Ukrainians and maintaining a strong connection to their cultural roots.
As the Ukrainian community in Sault Ste. Marie continues to grow, this event marks the beginning of a new chapter—one of unity, cultural pride, and celebration.
