New Guest Houses in Guelph and Elora: A Home for Ukrainian Newcomers

This November, Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis is opening two new Ukrainian Guest Houses in Guelph and Elora, marking its first locations in Wellington County. These homes aim to provide a warm welcome and much-needed support for Ukrainian newcomers navigating life in Canada without the benefits typically available to refugees.

A Safe Space to Start Anew

The guest houses will offer temporary housing for those lacking the financial means to secure their accommodations or face challenges finding landlords willing to rent due to job or credit history constraints. As founder Stephanie Goertz explains,

"Our houses provide an opportunity for newcomers to build social connections, which are crucial for success in Canada."

The Stories Behind the Homes

The Guelph/Eramosa property was generously offered by a Rotary Club member who wanted to help displaced Ukrainians. Although some minor renovations—like painting and new flooring—are still underway, the house is expected to open within the next couple of weeks.

The Elora property, located just five minutes south of town, is being prepared for a family of three. This property was particularly significant as it came at "the perfect time" for this family, whose pet made it challenging to find suitable accommodations elsewhere.

Over the coming days, volunteers will outfit the house with essentials like dishes, bedding, towels, and hygiene items to ensure the family feels at home upon their arrival.

Building Futures Beyond Housing

Our mission extends beyond providing shelter. The organization is connecting with employers in Guelph and Elora to secure jobs for newcomers. We also rely heavily on financial contributions to maintain our operations. With government support for newcomers expected to end in March 2025, Grassroots is bracing for an increase in demand for its services.

A Testament to Grassroots’ Impact

For newcomers like Lyudmila Chentsova, Grassroots has been life-changing. After arriving in Canada last spring with her sons, Chentsova found a host family, and employment, and eventually reunited with her husband through Grassroots support. Now, she volunteers with the group to give back to the community that welcomed her.

"I was so happy when I heard from Grassroots," said Chentsova. "This has been a big help for me and my family."
