Ukrainians fleeing war could find permanent home in Ontario’s north.

As the Ukrainian conflict continues to displace families, the prospect of building a new life in Northern Ontario is emerging as a promising solution. Stephanie Goertz, co-founder and organizer of Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis, is at the forefront of this initiative. Volunteer movement hosts seminars to inform newly settled Ukrainians about the opportunities awaiting them in Northern Ontario, under a planned federal program to help immigrants integrate into northern and rural communities.

A Multifaceted Approach to Settlement

The seminars, scheduled for July 20 and August 1, aim to connect various stakeholders, including municipalities, economic development centers, businesses, settlement agencies, and workforce labor boards. This collaborative effort seeks to create a clear pathway for Ukrainians to achieve residency and integrate into their new communities. Stephanie Goertz emphasizes the value these highly educated and skilled newcomers bring, stating,

“As they continue to work on their English skills, they’re going to be incredibly valuable community members in the future.”

Expanding to Northern Ontario

Recognizing the need for sustainable settlement solutions, Grassroot's team is now focusing on Northern Ontario. The organization is researching living costs, housing, employment, and the process of applying for permanent residency in northern communities such as Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, and North Bay. Moreover, the federal government’s upcoming rural and northern pathway program offers a beacon of hope for many displaced Ukrainians. With detailed outlines expected this fall, it could provide a structured framework for new immigrants to establish roots in Northern Ontario.
