At Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis, we believe that real change begins with people who care. As we celebrate National Volunteer Week in Canada, we take a moment to recognize and thank the incredible individuals who have made our mission possible — our volunteers.

Over the past few years, our team has helped more than 4,500 Ukrainians settle into new lives in Canada. Behind every success story — from finding stable housing to securing employment or simply feeling welcomed — there’s a volunteer who made it happen.

💬 A Message from Our Volunteer Coordinator

“Volunteers are the heart of our team. It is thanks to their dedication, energy, and talents that we’ve been able to help over 4,500 Ukrainians settle and start new lives here in Canada,” says Inna Biliaieva, Volunteer Coordinator at Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis.

She continues:

“Grassroots exists because of its volunteers, and they are far more than just helpers. We often use the word 'family' because every volunteer genuinely cares: Do newcomers have enough food and warm clothing? Have they found a job? Do they have a bed to sleep in? These aren’t just tasks — they are acts of compassion.”

Our team includes over 1,000 incredible individuals — translators, teachers, healthcare workers, seniors, and everyday people who simply stepped up when they were needed most. They are behind every intake application, every phone call, every ride, and every warm smile that helps someone feel seen and supported.

From driving newcomers to appointments, interpreting during critical meetings, delivering groceries, or offering emotional support, every act of service creates a real human connection. These moments help people stay afloat and begin rebuilding their lives with dignity and hope.
