Stephanie Goertz was awarded Citizen of the Year in Wilmot Township, Waterloo Region on September 13, 2024.
Stephanie is recognized as founding Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis, a then community-led group that started at the beginning of the war in Ukraine (2022). The group has continued to grow and expand and has become a not-for-profit, 16267661 Canada Association, with expansions in Sault Saint Marie and Thunder Bay.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me. There are so many people in our community that also deserve this honor. I want to use this opportunity to remind everyone that bombs continue to hit schools, hospitals, and other public spaces in Ukraine. In August at least 184 civilians were killed and 856 injured in Ukraine. Grassroots urgently need financial donations since most government programs have closed leaving Grassroots a last beacon of hope for many.”
Ukrainians are not entering Canada as refugees and do not receive housing or the same financial support. Many times families choose to go back to Ukraine instead of being homeless in Canada.
Stephanie has been a dedicated volunteer within Wilmot township during and before starting Grassroots Response, contributing to the fight for farmland, school council, 50by30WR, GreenWR, Faith Climate Justice, Citizens for Safe Ground Water, Green Party of Canada and Green Part of Ontario, Wilmot Youth Soccer coach, Nith Valley EcoBoosters, Wilmot Horticultural Society, Waterloo Region Health Coalition, Gravel Watch Ontario and more.
Stephanie Hertz is a shining example of a person who was born to do good deeds and cannot imagine her life without volunteering. Through her leadership and dedication, Stephanie has made a significant impact on the lives of many individuals and families. Stephanie's selfless efforts have not gone unnoticed, and she has become a role model for others in the community. We eagerly congratulate her on her well-deserved award and wish her continued success in overcoming obstacles on her journey to reach new summits.
