In the spirit of community and collaboration that we hosted our evening on 1 February 2024 in the welcoming and warm environment of the Temple Baptist Church in Cambridge. The event was a resounding success, bringing together passionate individuals for the Volunteer Meeting and the New Ukrainian Guest House Community Meeting.
Volunteer Meeting: Uniting for a Cause
The Volunteer Meeting was a vibrant gathering of 47th Hespeler community members eager to make a difference. Our discussions focused on how we can collectively support Ukrainian newcomers, emphasizing the urgent need for housing solutions. The founder of the Grassroots Response, Stephanie Goertz, spoke about the array of support and assistance opportunities that Grassroots provides to Ukrainians. Her words were joined by volunteers from St. Jacobs and Cambridge, who have been helping Ukrainians lost their homes for two years now.

Transforming Spaces: The New Ukrainian Guest House in Hespeler
The highlight of the evening was the detailed presentation on the transformation of an empty downtown Hespeler building into a welcoming guest house for Ukrainian families. This initiative is not just about providing shelter; it's about fostering a supportive community for those starting anew in our region.
Project Insights:
We are addressing the critical housing gap for Ukrainian newcomers under the CUAET Work Visa, who lack governmental housing and financial support.
The project kicked off with the discovery and rental of a promising 5-plex, driven by the urgent pleas from Ukrainian families.
Our goal is to quickly renovate and prepare this new space in Hespeler, with community support being pivotal to our success.
Looking Back:
Over 800 Ukrainian newcomers have found a place to call home through our initiatives.
Our efforts have expanded to include 7 Guest Houses, with more on the horizon.
Your Role and Our Collective Journey Forward
Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our community, we have already made significant strides in providing urgent housing solutions. Our St. Jacobs Guest House is a shining example of the transformative power of community action. We encourage everyone to get involved, whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading the word. Every action counts towards building a stronger, more inclusive community. Your efforts are creating a ripple effect of hope and positivity across our community.
